The Review:
Yesterday, September 7th, 2004, AIM/AOL has released their final version of 5.9.
It is recommended you do NOT install this. Especially for users at this website that love using AIM themes.. etc
But if you want to, it is all up to you and if you like it, etc.
Here is an update on the costs... etc
The company will charge $1.95 for a monthly subscription to its expanded package of personalization tools, dubbed as AIM Expressions, and offer a yearlong subscription to the service for $9.95.
AOL is also selling its animated SuperBuddy icons for $1.95 each, or three for $4.95.
Why is AOL doing this? The subscription IM business is part of AOL's overall strategy for revenue diversification to supplement its declining dial-up ISP business.
That being said... lets do a walkthrough of what AIM 5.9 looks like... what is new, changed, etc...
So we go to install AIM, something new is here, AIM Popup blocker... wow? I recommend you do NOT install any of these 3 items
So after the installation is done... make sure you delete 2 folders...
Go to My Computer then your C Drive, then your Program Files folder, and completely delete these 2 folders, "AOD" and "AWS"

So this ends my "review" sort of on AIM 5.9.
As I said, it is recommended you not use 5.9, and I doubt any time soon AOL/AIM will change these and have them be free once again... though it is not so bad, just, a bad move on AOL since most kids use AIM and are underage and are not going to be paying for such features... and adults using these? come on..

Thanks, that is a very good review! I can not stress enough the importance of
NOT installing this product.
The AOL toolbar / pop-up blocker actually ADDS popups. While it blocks pops from other sites, it by default allows pops on it's own sites. It adds popup ads on it's search engine, and frames results from it's search engine ( slowing it down and adding pops)
Additionally, ALL MYTHEME EXPRESSIONS do NOT work on AIM 5.9.\
If you need to Downgrade, I recommend AIM 5.5.3598, it has the security patch
released in August.

Plus, its ugly. *kills AIM 5.9*
I like my AIM expressions and I enjoy making them, so I do hope that AOL sees the error of thier ways(cause as mistical stated a lot of kids use AIM) because virtually NOBODY is going to pay for AIM expressions.
Hopefully the next AIM upgrade will allow the free AIM expressions

| I love MyThemes, and without realizing it, I updated my AIM to 5.9. Does anyone know how I can downgrade it to an older version? I should have guessed something was up when I downloaded 5.9 and my Theme disappeared. Grrr! |

when i ugraded to the 5.5.3598 it messed up my computer and i had to uninstall it and download the lower version.. so i wont be upgrading my aim ne more... it seems like the more they add the more its been getting screwed up.. but maybe thats just me.. But thanks for that information.

My IM box would get messed up and i wouldnt be able to talk to neone.. i would have to restart my computer to get it to work, i would lose my buddy list, and i would have to load it again. My profile kept erasing.

You have/had an AIM virus then, which I am 99% sure of, from the sounds of it, especially the part of your profile erasing, and buddy list disappearing. Have you formatted since? or have you not?
If you havn't reformatted your computer, you may still have an AIM virus, which I suggest either going here: http://www.jayloden.com/VirusClean.htm to read up on things, or just downloading his AIMFix.exe file, which will clean you of any aim viruses that it scans and removes. If you can not find the link for the AIMFix on his site, it is the following: http://www.jayloden.com/AIMFix.exe
It is safe to use, I've had a few people use it and has fixed their problems with no other problems added.
But as I said, I am 99% sure it had to have been an AIM virus.. or some type of one, since I've never heard of such person having a problem as you have, with this version/build of aim.

AOL/AIM basically decided they werent making enough money and now wants to exploit its users for even more..its bad enough they suck as an ISP..but now they are messing w/ AIM too...UGH!!!  |

aim 5.9 really does suck. a way u can downgrade is if your lucky enuff 2 still the install file for aim 5.5 all u have to do is find it and install it and you no longer have aim 5.9 thats what i did and everythings back 2 normal and you still can have all of the positive parts of aim 5.9 such as the buddy sounds if you made 1 b-4 you downgraded  |
